Safety First: What do in the event of a riot; A South African context

The escalating energy crisis in South Africa has many negative consequences including surging negative emotions and hardships which could eventually lead to civil unrest and looting or riots. While it’s disheartening to think about potential riots, being prepared is the key to navigating such situations.

The question is what do you do in the event of riots or looting?

We advise you to stay calm and be prepared to evacuate your home , if necessary: In the event that the situation escalates and you feel unsafe you need to have a plan in place for evacuation. Identify safe routes, arrange for transportation, and have a designated meeting point for your family or loved ones and seek shelter in secure locations like The Capital Hotels , Apartments and Resorts. Remember, it’s always better to be safe than sorry.

We have an excellent track record of operating in a crisis as witnessed in COVID and therefore have a Riot Plan, we have been preparing since load shedding began.

Our apartment hotels in Gauteng, Durban, Cape Town and Mbombela offers a Safe Place to stay in the event of riots with riot trained staff, Communication, Power, Water and Food redundancies as well as Riot Security teams staying on site who are prepared and equipped for riots.

We have taken the following measures in order to provide safe havens nationally.

1. Power

All our hotels and apartments have generators allowing a minimum of 48 hours back up power with secured and preferential Diesel top up supplies, enabling guests to have an uninterrupted stay and enjoy hot meals and hot showers.

2. Water

All our hotels and apartments have domestic tanked water supply, with a minimum of 36 hours backup water and further water reserves and tanker supplies, allowing uninterrupted supply water.

3. Food

All our hotels and apartments have increased food stock reserved as well as secured and preferential supply chain that allow us to provide guests with great meals although certain menu items may not be available as per our standard menu.

4. Communication

All our hotels and apartments have high speed and internet with multiple redundant communications channels including satellite systems at certain hotels. We’ve taken care to ensure our high speed Wi-Fi has redundancies to keep you working or watching your favourite shows.

5. Security

We have private security companies on site residing within our hotels to ensure transport logistics are no threat to our security.

The riot team have gone through intensive riot management training and have full riot gear and riot defense vehicles.

6. Trained staff

Our hotels have staffing plans to ensure that our staff are looked after and stay at the hotel to ensure transport logistics are resolved.

Our staff have been trained and equipped with firefighting equipment and many of our staff members have been trained for riots and associated medical and evacuation protocols.

7. Our children’s entertainment centers will be operational, ensuring that our youngers guests have a safe environment to play.

Stay informed and stay safe: keep yourself updated on the situation by monitoring reliable news sources, local authorities’ announcements, and social media accounts of reputable organizations. This will enable you to make informed decisions and stay aware of any potential dangers or developments.

Maintain a low profile: during times of unrest, it is advisable to keep a low profile and avoid drawing attention to yourself. Refrain from posting sensitive information or your whereabouts on social media.
